“Light of Print, Delight of Reading — BIGC Experiential Reading Festival” is a visual identity and extended design system made for Beijing Institute of Graphic Communication's campus programme during National Reading Week. The university specialises in publishing and printing, so the design does not settle for the usual imagery of reading; it starts instead from the origins of printing and takes the square as its core symbol. The square points to seals, movable type, printed characters and screen pixels alike. Combined, sequenced and varied, it produces order and rhythm, linking the printing tradition to digital reading.
Together with the event's circulation route and BIGC's “Qiushi Yuan” identity, the theme was set as “Spring Blossoms, Autumn Fruit.” Seasonal change stands in for the act of reading: from sprouting to flowering to bearing fruit, it is time accumulating and a mind settling. Four groups of forms sit within one grammar of block composition — a green rounded square reads as a spring leaf, pink squares assemble into a flower, yellow squares fall as autumn leaves, blue squares stack into ripe fruit. The Chinese title is spelled out in dots, echoing the halftone screen; squares and circles sit side by side, answering ink on paper and pixels on screen. Through overprinting, transparency and arrangement, the four colours turn the form of a book into growing layers of colour, and into an editable visual language.
The extensions carry the system across posters, display boards, merchandise and digital media in a modular way. Unified yet flexible, the graphic system keeps the event recognisable across many settings and makes it easy for each section to apply. It lets a younger audience see the printing DNA behind the work, and turns reading from static information into a campus experience people can join and share — giving BIGC's National Reading Week a clear, lasting cultural identity.
